<raising a finger>PureData is free software which is not quite the same as
just open source.</raising a finger> ;)
for me, the interesting thing about PD is that you can run clients on many
machines at once that can communicate over tcp/ip with each other..

there is another soft, this time freeware (without the "soft") which is very
powerful: thats vvvv from meso (probably written for their own purposes). it
focuses a lot more on video and 3d real time outputs.
you can get it here: http://vvvv.meso.net (it works only under windows i
think)

two other softs that should also be noted i believe:
gephex: http://www.gephex.org/ (for win and linux) and
veejay: http://veejay.sourceforge.net/ (linux)

the last on is also distributed (among others) as a part of a the dyne:bolic
linuxLiveCD based on debian GNU/Linux that focuses on sound and video
applications:
www.dynebolic.org
(download > burn > boot > try out > take out > reboot normally).

many many people work with finalcut too and a hardware mixer at the same time.

something nice if you like colored ascii outputs is the libcaca library which
should work on most unix systems (in a terminal though).
